2023 Home Reset - Post Christmas, Home Organizing for the New Year

Get ready for some post Christmas chaos, home organizing content! Now, this home-reset didn’t happen right after Christmas Day, so the house didn’t start off looking too crazy. But the Christmas decorations needed to come down, and the house wasn’t going to un-decorate itself.

Side note: It was the first week of January when I did this and I was actually really struggling with being sick this week, which is why this content did not get to you all sooner.

I actually have so many plans for this year and my brand. And getting sick the first week of January pretty much put a wrench in all my hopes and dreams… But I'm feeling so much better now!

I am going to be doing a sit down chatty video for you all talking about my 2023 goals and ambitions. So you'll have to wait for that.

play corner

I started with our daughter’s little play corner. After Christmas there were a lot of toys in this area. So I brought a lot of the toys to her room to organize another day. I only like to keep one toy per cube in her play area so that she doesn’t get overwhelmed.

Dining Room

Next it was time to tackle the dining room. When I’m doing my home organizing, I like to start by putting all of the decoration on the dining room table. This is how I like to clean or put away decorations. I like to get everything out of the way and in one location that way I can then assess everything I have and better put things away in a more organized manner.

Living Room

Now for the living room towers. First, I take everything off of the towers and put them on the kitchen island before I then move everything over to the dining room table.

Kitchen

Then I went on to our main kitchen island. This is right in the middle of our house, so it kind of always acts as a big old dumping ground. This thing always has junk on it, but occasionally a few times a year, it is completely spotless. (Except for like a potted plant and a fruit bowl at the end.)

And I've actually been getting some questions lately about our butcher block countertops and what the upkeep and care is like for those. So for daily cleaning, I just use a half-and-half solution of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and wipe the counters clean with a washcloth. And then we just have to basically oil it down every other month or so to make sure it doesn't get all dry and cracky.

Now it’s time to tackle our open shelves in the kitchen. I love our open shelves, and for a long time, I had no idea how to style these or make them look nice. I finally got a hang of it.

We’ve added some utility with these baskets, which I love. I have at least three sets of these baskets. They're super nice because they have a lid. So we use these to store things like spices, tea… things like that. And of course, we use a lot of cute Mason jars.

Getting Organized

Now it’s time to get everything off of the kitchen island back to the dining room table. That way I can assess where everything can go in our console table.

Placing everything in this console table is a little bit like playing Tetris. And to be honest, it does kind of end up with a little bit of like an avalanche situation. But it's not too bad. I like to put the breakable stuff in here, so I don't have to worry about packaging it away. I just try and be really careful with everything and try and put the heavy or breakable stuff on the bottom. Then, some of the lighter, soft things I can kind of pack in around the top.

We use the left side of our hutch for almost all Christmas stuff. And then the right side we have a lot of our serving ware or bigger event type things that we only use every once in a while.

The last thing I did was move everything from the dining room table and into the garage. From there, I will put everything away in the appropriate boxes in the garage on another day. At the time, I really just needed to get everything out of the house!

And let me just tell you, it feels so good to have a blank slate and to have the house reset to how it is during the regular year. Of course, it is a little sad getting rid of all the Christmas decorations. But there's something about home organizing for a New Year and starting with a fresh slate.
